Talkin' Shop

I love photography! I love to talk ‘shop’ with anyone that might be the slightest bit interested in photography. Several people have asked me what kind of camera I own. I use a Canon 5d Marks II. My camera and the lenses I own are great tools for capturing creative images. I chose my camera because of it’s incredible high iso ability to capture images in low light conditions. I can crank that puppy up to 3200 iso and still get a pretty clear shot without too much grain. The fact that it’s a full frame camera (vs. a cropped frame) I’m able to take advantage of my lens’s full capability without sacrificing a crop factor. I own three lenses; 50mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8 L, and my 70-200mm 2.8 L. Each one allows me to create something a little different when it comes to creativity. My 50mm, with it’s 1.4 f-stop brings in an amazing amount of light when wide open and is perfect for those lower light situations. My 70-200mm has such incredible zoom and compression creating that creamy bokeh look that I love. And my 24-70mm is a perfect lens for portrait photography. Put that lens on a full-frame camera like the 5d, its wide angel ability is pretty impressive at 24mm. Do I have a wish list for additional lenses? Sure, I do. There are so many amazing lenses on the market and knowing the strengths of each lens will help in deciding which lens is right for each particular situation.

Sometimes People mistake the camera and lenses themselves for creating the final image. You may actually be surprised if you see an image straight out of camera (SOOC). I’ve included a few before and after below. Because I shoot in a RAW format I am not allowing my camera to process the image. Unlike jpeg format where the camera compresses and processes the image leaving little room for changes in post processing. Instead, I download the RAW files on my computer which acts like my digital ‘dark room’. I pull the images into a program called Lightroom. That is where I sort and organize my images and make initial edits to exposure, contrast, brightness, saturation and vibrance. I then take my images into CS5 (Photoshop). I use the image taken in my camera as almost a rough draft to my final masterpiece, if you want to call it that. I can enhance the image with vibrant colors, sharp features, touch-ups as well as crop and add a vignette to a photo to be pleasing to the eye. I personally like to add textures to enhance an image and give it either a vintage or edgy feel depending on what I see in my vision. Photographers each have a slightly different process depending on their own interpretation of a photograph. That is what makes us each unique. I think when choosing a photographer for your family or event it’s important to look at the photographer’s individual style and make sure it matches up to your taste.

I applied for my business license in late 2009 and made things official for Colleen Davis Photography. I have a passion for what I do. And as much as there is to learn out there, I enjoy every minute. The people I meet, challenges I give myself in creating images, and editing photographs to capture what I see - it’s all wonderful!

Someone is turning th...th...thr...

Three years old!! That's a difficult one to say! Probably more so because he's our baby and he's growing up so fast! With a January birthday, I never imagined that he would ever get an outdoor session for his birthday unless he was bundled from head to toe to beat the cold. But this year, with temps in the 40's here in MN (unheard of for January), we headed outdoors and took some images that really captured his personality. He loves being outside! All summer he spent hours on the play set...climbing, swinging, sliding. Even as it got cold, this little guy would bundle up just to get on that tire swing! What a perfect week of warmer temperatures to celebrate his birthday and be able to enjoy the outdoors! Happy Birthday! We love you and are so happy you're part of our family! xoxoxo

Happy New Year! It's already January 3rd. After a full two weeks of enjoying family, friends, and all of the festivities that come along with the end of the year, I'm back in my office. I'm back and being grateful for all that 2011 brought. With close to 40 sessions including a dozen HS Seniors and three weddings, I met some wonderful new people in 2011. I feel so blessed. I look forward to all that 2012 will bring. Happy New Year!

There's something about the Christmas season...

One of the most peaceful times of the Christmas season for me is enjoying the beauty of Christmas tree lights. There is nothing more relaxing after a hectic day than quietly sitting in front of the tree as it lights up the room with a soft glow. When kids are tucked in, backpacks and lunches are packed for the next day (ok, I'm really not that organized) and the house is quiet, I love nothing more than to enjoy the Christmas lights on the tree as they reflect onto the window. To me, this is such a peaceful photo.

Here are some tips on creating beautiful Christmas tree light photos: Use only the lights on the Christmas tree when capturing your image. You can accomplish this without a flash if you slow down the shutter speed and use a tripod or steady surface. You can open the aperture of your lens as wide open as possible to allow more light into the camera. This image was shot at 1.8f, 50mm and a slow shutter speed of .4 seconds. Experiment with your camera and have fun capturing the beauty of the lights.

Having worked with this High School Senior last fall, it was great meeting his entire family for their turn behind the camera! Despite the cooler temperatures in Minnesota, this family braved the cold air! They had just cut their Christmas tree that morning and were ready for their family photos that afternoon! Although, we are past the bright fall colors this time of year, it is still one of my favorite times to photograph. I love the warm brown tones and tall soft prairie grass which give a country feel. I love this family! They put a smile on my face every time I see them! I've known them forever and have enjoyed seeing their family grow with these two awesome kiddos! We took advantage of one of the last 50 degree days here in Minnesota for their session. I may have to hire their little girl as my assistant. As photographers we are so comfortable behind the camera. It's rare that we get a chance to be on the other side. This was a great opportunity for me to put a fellow photographer friend on the other side of the camera. A busy mother of three, I knew she would treasure a few of just her and her hubby too! Three little darlings...what can I say? Cute as can be! And a huge Kudos to dad - who brought them to their session by himself! Mom wasn't able to join us but with the weather growing cooler and wanting fall photos of the kids, she sent her husband with the three kiddos to the session! I couldn't help but picture my husband taking our kids to a photo session without me there to supervise! That thought actually made me LOL!! But their dad was cool, calm and collected. The afternoon went so unbelievably smooth!! Mom can be so proud of how great her children did and how wonderful her husband was to take on this task....I'm extra excited to show their sneak peek so mom can see what we were up to yesterday!

A day in a junkyard!

Well, it was more of an antique junkyard! I love photographing these kiddos. They are all friends of each of my own kids and therefore their mom and I are friends by default....although, she is one of the nicest people I know and I'm sure I would have picked her to be my friend even if it weren't for the kids!! So back to the junkyard. We made a day trip of it. Packed seven kids up (mine were with us too) and drove south. The kids were all off from school so we decided to make a day of it. I had been trying to schedule their fall session and we decided no better place than an antique junkyard! And, it worked great! The kids had SO much to explore that they didn't even realize they were hungry for lunch until well after 2:30pm! At some point I'll blog my own kids from our trip but now here are these beautiful children!!

I woke up to a beautiful morning with temps almost in the 50's! Knowing I had a morning session, I was hoping for a warm start to the day! Whew! I also woke up with no voice! Yikes! Luckily, I had a singing duck puppet that was going to take the place of my voice for getting the attention of these two cuties! But, these two sweet girls didn't need the silly duck or my voice! They did great!! As did the family! Grabbing the last bit of color from our Minnesota fall, we headed to a gorgeous park!! Here are just a few from our morning session:

There is something about the crisp fall air that is just refreshing!! I have to admit it's a nice change to put away the cropped pants and sandals for jeans and boots. This adorable HS Senior agrees! She planned to have her photo session when fall was fully under way and her favorite comfortable cardigan sweaters were appropriate attire. I had a great time meeting her and her fun family during our walk around Stillwater finding all sorts of neat backdrops! Here's a quick peek....

Whenever I get the chance to photograph a lifelong friend it's a special treat! I've known this gal since college and it's so fun to see her sweet family! Little did we know back then where our lives would take us and who our children would be. It's so neat to have the privilege to work with High School Seniors. They always impress me. And, this beautiful girl did just that! Having traveled the world already before she has even graduated High School! Loving to work with children, it was a perfect fit for her to travel to Korea this past summer and work with a local school. I admire young people who take opportunities and make them happen! 9-10-11 - what a great wedding date! I met this gorgeous bride five years ago, about the time she and her new husband first met! It's been so exciting to watch their love grow! I couldn't be happier for both of them! What a gorgeous day for a wedding!! Such a meaningful and emotional ceremony as they took their vows and began their life together as husband and wife! With both coming from such loving families the day was so filled with emotion - excitement, laughter, tears but most of all filled with love! Congratulations!!!

Today was the day they planned for over a year. It was perfect in every way. The weather was beautiful. Their friends and family were present as they became husband and wife. It was on the grounds of the elegant North Oak Country Club that this couple expressed their love for each other and exchanged vows. The bride and groom set aside time following the wedding ceremony for just the two of them. Since they chose not see each other before the ceremony, it was their special time together. It wasn't hard to capture the deep affection they have for one another. Congratulations to both of you!!

What a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon with this fun couple that are currently living thousands of miles apart from each other! They had a week to spend together this summer and were able to fit in a romantic little photo shoot. These two were fantastic letting me try some new poses. Since this gal is a longtime friend of mine, we had fun catching up with lots of laughs. Our friendship began 25 years ago - yikes, that makes us sound old. I Love Farms!

I am so excited about this project I can hardly stand it! I have to admit - I have an infatuation with old farms. I adore large historic barns with all their character. I've always been drawn to the countryside landscape. As I drive past farmlands with barns and silos...it’s just picturesque to me. I snap the photo in my head and promise someday to use an actual camera to capture the view.

I have no idea why I have a such a fondness for old farms. I always have. I remember being 10 years old begging my parents to move us out to the country so we could live on a farm and have horses! Sadly, that never happened.

Now that I live in Woodbury.....a town that was once farmland... I am amazed how many gorgeous old barns are still standing. Of course, I notice and admire them all. They are each so unique and hold their own story from the past.

You can imagine my excitement when I found myself listening to Inez Oehlke (91 years young) speak of growing up in Woodbury and raising her family on the farm that sits at Co. Rd. 19 and Bailey Road! Mrs. Oehlke resided in the darling white farmhouse for over 70 years! It had belonged to her husband's parents before that. She and her husband raised two children on their dairy farm as well as had a pasture full of Tennessee Walker horses. Now, why couldn’t they have been my parents so I could have fulfilled my dream of living on a farm with horses? lol.

I grew up knowing my own grandparents were raised on farms in the early 1900's and maybe my love of old farms is a way to bring me closer to that time in history and imagine what it was like for them. There is a photograph or two of both of my grandparents when they were young living in the country. Sadly, I haven't found one of the farm itself. That is one thing I wish I had more of - photographs of the farms that belonged to my great-grandparents. I would treasure photographs like that.

Now that the Oehlke's farmhouse and land belong to a neighboring church, I couldn't help but feel Mrs. Oehlke should have photographs that could be passed down to her family some day. Images of the white farmhouse, barns and stables can be treasured by future generations . I offered to capture some unique photos like the ones I wish I had from my own grandparents' farms. This week I felt like a kid in a candy store walking around the farm capturing the gorgeous country views and a little piece of the Oehlke family's history. I’m excited to share a few of my favorites:

What a perfect evening for a summer photo shoot! I knew this family's session would be a fun one! Not only are they gorgeous, but they are so sweet and such wonderful neighbors. And the girls are awesome... my kids would agree as these girls have been their babysitters for years! Gorgeous light and sun flare for a special session!

I noticed the beautiful sunlight last night and commented what a perfect night for photographs....too bad I didn't have a session scheduled for that evening. Then, out of the blue my daughter says 'Hey mom, how about you take me out for a session tonight?'. Ok, at that point I about fell out of my chair. My kids never volunteer for a photo shoot. In fact, it usually requires quite a bit of bribery on my end. Before she finished her sentence, I had the car packed. She turned 10 yrs old in April and we had never really done a formal session as we were waiting for better weather and to get outdoors. She absolutely loves reading and all I knew is that I wanted to incorporate her love of books somehow in the session. With that gorgeous light I was able to really capture the sweetness and beauty of my daughter who is growing up so fast! I love having my mommy/daughter time!

Talented HS Senior!

This gorgeous HS Senior has the most beautiful smile. When she smiles, I feel like her whole self smiles. You can't help but be drawn to her; not to mention she is so full of talent! I've been entertained by her acting in the local theaters and enjoyed her amazing voice at church for years. It's her singing that is very special to her. Of course, I couldn't let the session go without incorporating her passion. When she pulled out a song book that once belonged to her Great-Grandmother, I knew she pulled out an amazing piece of history! The book was aged with old tape and her Great-Grandmother's handwritten name on the cover...so very cool. To be able to include such a special heirloom into her session.....Oh, I love family history. I also loved that this session took place in the prairie of wild flowers where she grew up and on the back yard tire swing where she played as a child. The location can make someone's images extra special!! Thank you, I had such a fun evening with you!! Here's just a peek at a few from your session!

Celebrating a First Birthday!!

Happy First Birthday!!! One year ago I photographed this darling little girl as a newborn! I cannot believe a whole year has gone by and I'm photographing her for her first birthday! How much fun to see the changes she's made since even her six month session back in January! She greeted me today with the biggest smile and these adorable blonde curls!! Love them!!! With her birthday being the week of the 4th of July I couldn't resist bringing in some patriotic colors! Cutie Pies Ahead!

What a gorgeous week and what a perfect morning to spend with two cutie pies! We got this session in before the real heat wave hit this week!! This was a real treat for me to see these two sweet sisters again! I met them last fall for their family session and now the baby just turned ONE!! Happy Birthday! How fun to see her personality and how much she has grown! Soon she'll be as grown up as her big sister! Big sister turned three years old since I last saw her and can hold a wonderful conversation....I could just meet her for coffee some morning! Here Comes the Bride!

I love weddings!! I love watching the couple see each other for the first time, exchange vows and share their love with friends and family. It's exciting to be part of the one day they have planned for many months! The excitement in their eyes and the overall happiness makes the day magical. I am typically not a wedding photographer. However, I did get the opportunity to second shoot at a beautiful wedding this past weekend. Just the sweetest couple with the most genuine family and friends! I couldn't be happier for this couple!
The wedding even had me back on my old stomping grounds at the University of St. Thomas, where I graduated from college! It was wonderful to be back on campus and back in the gorgeous St. Thomas Chapel. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your wedding day!

Stillwater Pony HS Senior Session!

The weather finally cooperated and boy, it was worth the wait! Couldn't have asked for a more perfect night for this session! This handsome HS Senior was great! He is such a well rounded guy! So impressive!! With football as his passion, I knew we would naturally incorporate that into his session. I counted on visiting his school and using the stadium in some way, but it was on the drive home when he thought his session was over and he was chillin' with some Arby's....when I noticed the most amazing sunset! I pulled over like a crazy person and asked him to grab his football and helmet for a silhouette image against the perfect sunset. They've Hatched!

When our friends told us they were hatching baby chicks for a local farmer, we couldn't wait to meet them! After 21 days of turning the eggs in the incubator, we got the call on thursday that 11 new baby chicks arrived! How exciting! They will be heading back to the farm this week but not before we could fit them in for a little 'baby chick' session. They were such cute models.

Celebrating 50 years!

That is 50 years of marriage! Congratulations are in order! What a special anniversary! Three kids and nine grandchildren later this couple was given a wonderful anniversary gift from their children....a 50th wedding anniversary session! I love it! I recently had an engagement session for a young couple who will take their vows this fall and I left there thinking everyone should have an engagement session....even if you're already married. And, especially if you've been married 50 years! This sweet couple still had that spark when they walked, talked and laughed together! I can only image the memories they share after 50 years of marriage! It was so inspiring and fun to meet you and I congratulate you on your very special anniversary!! Celebrating a 5th Birthday in our house!

The celebrations don't slow down for us this time of year. My son has been counting down the days until his 5th birthday! I think all kids know they reach the big time when they turn five! Today is finally here and he is five!!! With him every step of the way is his ever-so-special Big Froggy. You can see just how much love Big Froggy has been given over the years when you look at his half rubbed off green eyes and raggedy fur, But he will, undoubtedly, be part of this special day! You can expect him to be seated right next to the birthday boy at the dinner table anxiously awaiting a piece of ice cream cake. However, my son's name won't be the only one on the birthday cake....he shares his birthday every year with his Nana!! Yes, he was her birthday present five years ago! Happy birthday to two very special people!! Xoxoxoxo

I was looking forward to this session for months! I had a little edge on this one since I've known this boy and his family for a while now. We were able to incorporate his interests and talents into his session, which I love to do! Being an outdoors type of guy, a session in the woods seemed perfect! He also recently earned his Eagle Scout award which impressed the heck out of me! And, with working at boy scout camps the past few summers, we were able to bring that part of his life into his session. With a love of music and many drum lessons later, we pulled the drums outside for a quick jam session! What a great sport! Here's just a peek of a few of the images......

I love my job because I find myself meeting the most amazing people. I don't even have to leave my own town! This week I spent time with two published authors. Meet Karen Pavlicin, author of Military Life, Surviving Deployment, and Life After Deployment. Karen selflessly shares her most personal stories and written poems to give support to other military families. Karen, once a military wife, supported her loving husband while he was out defending our country. In addition to writing, Karen is a talented songwriter and singer. She wrote and created the song I Believe in You to honor the Minnesota National Guard and dedicated it to all US military service members and their families. It's truly a beautiful song.
Karen's life journey continued as her husband became ill and passed away from cancer at the age of 38. With her young son, Karen found her strength in prayer and in her writing. She published a children's book Perch, Mrs. Sackets, and Crow's Nest about a little boy's visit to his grandma's house the summer after his father's death. In addition to this special book, Karen found strength in her music. She has published a beautiful CD, Little Bit of Faith with a collection of her work. 100% of profits raised from this CD are donated to Cancer Research. Spending session time with both Karen and Meagan was such a honor for me. It's so humbling to learn another person's story and it is such a gift that they are both willing to share their life's journey. Here's a peek at a few images from Karen's session.

She's published!

For over a year I would see Meagan Frank at drop off and pick up at my son's preschool. We would briefly chat about how her daughter was always talking about my son outside of school and how much my son talked about her daughter! They had been setting up play dates without us even knowing. Meagan was a fun, upbeat, and friendly mom. Little did I know that she had been hard at work preparing to publish her first book! How impressive is that? When I found out I quickly began following her blog and gained much respect for her writing style. She's entertaining and her sense of humor certainly comes through. Her book is titled "Choosing to Grow: Through Marriage". As a child of divorced parents, Meagan knew that the statistics were heavily stacked in favor of her breaking marriage. She didn’t want to be a part of the divorce trend, so she set out on a quest to find the tools she needed to fight for her marriage. I'm always in awe when someone can share so openly and honestly about their own life in a way that may be helpful to others. This book sounds amazing and I cannot wait to purchase my own copy (maybe even have it autographed by the author). They're Getting Married!

I looove engagement sessions! In fact, I think everyone needs one - even if you're already married!! This sweet couple is so much fun, so in love and can't wait to be married this fall with a reception on the river! They were up for anything and we got so many fun shots. With the backdrop of downtown Stillwater, we could have shot for hours (oh, we did) and still not cover all the cool spots. We dropped by Mara-Mi cafe' on Main for a some of the session and a few of their nummy treats! We ended our evening up on the hill overlooking the river with a vintage picnic! A Real Ballerina!

Just like so many little girls that dream of becoming a ballerina, this special girl made her dream come true! It's amazing the work and dedication that goes in to preparing for a performance for all to enjoy....hours and hours of practice not to mention many pairs of toe shoes! This session was so exciting as we had access to the historic Fitzgerald theater in St. Paul where this ballerina was about to take stage in the production of Don Quixote! The costume was exquisite with detail and beauty and it so fun to capture her passion in life. I admire so much about this young girl and am so proud to see how far she has come in her dancing career!! Many Congratulations!!

Talented H.S. Senior

This gorgeous H.S. Senior is getting ready to graduate in less than a month! This was one fun session....we wanted to incorporate her love of music with her outgoing personality. With a private concert in the woods, we were able to capture some amazing images with her vintage microphone! Don't be surprised if you find this girl on American Idol - she's fantastic!! No one ever said that a photo session with me wouldn't be an adventure....one filled with wood ticks and snakes all in the name of some beautiful images! It's Prom Season!

Despite the rainy start to their day this adorable couple wasn't going to let it get them down! She was prepared with the cutest pink parasol-type umbrella! I loved it!! It matched perfect to her beautiful dress. Which I must mention, the dress was hand made by her talented aunt!! I wish I had that kind of talent!! So impressed!! Her hair was amazing as well. Another talent I wish I had!! This darling couple didn't get to use that cute umbrella for long....the sun came out and they enjoyed a beautiful rest of the day!! A double digit birthday to celebrate!

We are celebrating in our house once again....my daughter is turning 10! She is so excited to be turning a number with double digits. As her mom, I cannot believe how fast that ten years flew by - it's actually scary. Especially if the next ten years goes by this fast! We've had loads of fun these past ten years and it's been amazing to watch her learn and grow into the wonderful person she is today! Wishing you all of the happiness on this special birthday!! A First Birthday!

Birthday's are fun...especially first birthdays! And, this was extra fun for me as I was able to photograph this little guy's family last year during a maternity session when he was still in his mommy's tummy. I then met him at his newborn session and again photographed him at six months!! He's such a cutie and has gained his own little fan club amongst a few of you that follow my blog! And, here he is....the birthday boy!! Happy first birthday!

My new office artwork

My New Year's Resolution was to work on my office space. I have been on the look out for the perfect artwork for my walls. After a few months of not finding what I wanted I thought why not create my own art? I've always had an infatuation with antiques. Whether it be found at a flea market or in a basement of a grandparent, I find myself drawn to the vintage-type items not only as a piece of history but as a treasure. I recently added to my vintage camera collection and decided to make them the focus of my new wall art. This week these images will be framed and added to my walls....thought I'd share my newest treasures.

My Newborn Fix!

Today I got a little newborn fix.....I'm so lucky!!! There is nothing as sweet as holding a newborn baby. It's like there is not a care in the world when you have a newborn in your arms. It's such a precious age and one that only lasts just a few weeks. Capturing newborns in those first 2 weeks of life are images that parents will treasure for a lifetime! I have a thing for the desert. Always have. Not sure if it's the dry heat and gorgeous weather or the unique southwest landscape. You just don't get the prickly cactus, desert palms and beautiful mountains in the midwest. The desert makes for a gorgeous backdrop and it feels so good to have a session outdoors again! I was looking so forward to getting a chance to photograph these sweet girls again. I'm lucky enough to be their Aunt and I only wish that I could get them in front of my camera more often!! We had so much fun and it was such a treat to spend a whole weekend with them! I have so many great images to process....but I wanted to get a quick sneak peek up on my blog!! I blinked....I swear I just met this little sweetheart yesterday at her newborn session! One blink of an eye and now she is celebrating six months! What a treat to get the opportunity to work with this darling baby girl again. I couldn't wait to see how she had changed! This little sweetie turns five in a few weeks and is so grown up! I've been lucky enough to know her since the day she was born. I've had photo sessions with her and her siblings in the past but today was just about the soon-to-be birthday girl! Another Celebration in the House!

Well, we have another birthday in the house....they come so quickly around here. This time my baby turns two! I attempted a two year session with him. I didn't set out to capture this image but as you know, it's nearly impossible to take photographs of your own children. It was getting close to nap time and he wanted his 'Bun-yay' (sounds almost French for Bunny) as it's referred to around our house. My fourth baby has been my only one to suck his thumb. It's soooo sweet (for now, ask me when he's 6yrs and cannot stop the habit!). His ritual: he takes the little tag on Bun-yay and rubs it against his nose and sucks his thumb as his comfort and makes his own little humming noise. I know someday he will outgrow this....and these sweet days will be a memory for me. Even though I was going for an image of his smiling face and big brown eyes, I was so happy to capture this moment as he was snuggled up with his Bun-yay and his thumb while getting some kisses from his big brother. This is one of those images that truly captures a moment, a moment in time that I will treasure! Happy Birthday baby boy!

Home for the Holidays

Nothing says Christmas time better than spending it with family. This family counted their blessings as their loved ones traveled across country to be together this snowy Christmas; a first in many years that they could all be together. Nothing better than to share in the excitement of little ones awaiting Santa's arrival, stockings filled with chocolate, and an heirloom mistletoe hung for all who enter. The Christmas Season is one of my favorites. It's an extra busy time of year for all of us. Decorating the house, baking, shopping, and wrapping; and when the craziness of the day quiets down and the kids are finally tucked in and asleep, there is peace found in the quiet of the house when only the glow of the Christmas lights shine. I love nothing more than to take time each night to enjoy the reason for the Christmas Season and reflect on what I am most grateful; my family, my friends and the opportunity to do what I love. I am also grateful for all of the new families I have worked with throughout 2010. I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Winter wonderland....that is what it looked like after a fresh coat of snow had fallen on the ground! Taking advantage of the beautiful snowfall, these gorgeous kids couldn't be scared off by a little cold weather. They did so awesome despite our temps in the 20's. Kids say the funniest things....

While photographing this family I was asking the little three year old what he was 'into' these days. Fully expecting to hear "Thomas the Train", "Diego" or "Lightening McQueen", I laughed so hard when he gave me a one word answer - "Poop". The word made him smile to say and the fact that his parents weren't stopping him, he kept smiling as he repeated it a few more times and I continued to have a conversation for the first time about 'poopin on the potty' while taking photographs. What a hoot! Seriously, this family was so fun to photograph. Since I've known them for nine years now, I've known these gorgeous kids since they were babies! They all have these amazing eyelashes as you can see!! Here are a few from our session:

Sweetness = Newborns! I had twice the special day today as I spent it with these precious newborn twins! They were so perfect and full of sweetness with their little newborn noises (and snorts)....one of my favorite stages, newborn! What a true miracle! And another bonus was to reconnect with an old friend and co-worker from back in the day of YP Advertising! Ahhh, the memories! So good to see you and meet your precious little ones!! Party of Seven!

When this family of seven called to book a session and mentioned they had this old Chevy pickup truck that was her husband's since he was 15 yrs old - I thought super cool. Then when they selected a location on nearby farmland - I knew I was going to have a field day (pun intended). I absolutely love the backdrops on a farm! But looking at these beautiful five children it wouldn't even matter the backdrop! These kids were amazing to hang out with - the one and only little boy couldn't have had bigger eyes when he spotted the large tractors...he was so excited!! And, with a first birthday celebration last week for their baby girl, we were able to get some fun birthday photos!! Here are some fun ones to share....

Today was special for me as I got to spend time with a dear friend and her family that I don't get to see often enough. This young, hip mom and I hold way too many memories together from our waitressing days! We were in each other's weddings and I'll never forget the day she had her first baby....and this month he will be getting his drivers license! What?? How did that happen? A 'Sweet' Session!

Not only was this little girl sweet as can be, so was her session! I mean really sweet as in sugar sweet...filled with bubble gum treats and a giant lollipop (a six serving size to be exact)! I had so much fun meeting her and their new little puppy!! Nothing is sweeter than when mom and daughter get photographed together in the place they spend much of their time - their own beautiful backyard!

Once upon a time there was a beautiful green eyed girl who met a little tree frog. She wasn't afraid of the little tree frog but instead befriended the little fellow. This naturally beautiful girl was right at home sitting on a chair lift at the top of the ski hill - even if it was the middle of July! She's a talented young ski instructor who will hopefully give me a few pointers on the slopes this winter. :) We found a great location on a perfect evening for her H.S Senior session. Horsing Around

My family spent some time down on the farm over Memorial Day weekend. Took some time out from boating, fishing and relaxing to capture some photos of my in-laws and their beautiful horses. Also, enjoyed their gorgeous flower gardens and found a nest of 2-day old baby birds tucked away in their backyard. Talk about some great photo opportunities - I was having a field day! Here are just a few highlights!

Six months and cute as can be!

I waited several weeks to meet this sweet little guy....after rescheduling our session a few times, the extra couple weeks gave him a chance to perfect sitting up! He did great!! He is so adorable and has the cutest personality! It was so fun to finally meet him! Enjoy this quick peek....

I spent the evening with this gorgeous couple who was celebrating their engagement! We waited out the rain this week and found the perfect evening! These two were so sweet and it was a privilege to be part of their special weekend. Wishing you guys the happiest future together!!

My youngest is learning about T-ball at an early age. He had a ball (pun intended) last night setting up the T and tipping the ball off with his bat...never saw a kid laugh so hard over and over - and it never got old. If he's lucky he'll see his first Twins Game this year. Go Twins! Here's a 10x20 storyboard idea to share.
